Why You Need Your Own Superhero Alter-Ego

I’m in the midst of organising the release of my single, and like many musicians these days, I have a tight budget and am having to do most of the work on my own. This and the battle to keep my other income streams (coaching, translation work, EFL teaching, admin work, voiceover work…to name but a few) can sometimes feel utterly overwhelming. Which is why I need to get totally hardcore and mega-focussed on what I’m working to achieve. That means there’s no room for chaos. No room for pandering to other people’s agendas instead of my own and absolutely no room for doubts, “It can’t be done!”s, or compare-and-despair Facebook-checking. Screw that nonsense. I need to get stuff done, y’know?!

Here’s where my superhero alter-ego comes in. I have to remind myself that I can be bigger than this. I can find the energy, drive and focus within me to get this stuff done. But I can only do it if I’m bringing my ‘A’ game. And that requires a superhero. The kind of pioneering, no nonsense, kick-ass superhero that I would have a hell of a lot of fun being. And fun is really important too.

If there’s a battle to be fought, I need:

Patsy Pioneer.

Part Joanna Lumley in The Avengers, part Amelia Earhart, Patsy Pioneer is the kind of person who gets things done with style and panache.

So if you are struggling with too many things on your plate and all the world and his dog wants your focus on their project not yours, take a moment to get yourself a superhero alter-ego. Pick a few reference images, define what you need your superhero to fight against (Small-mindedness? Doubters? Domesticity?) and create an alter-ego who can overcome or entirely annihilate those things.

I challenge you to do this, this week. Come up with a catchy, alliterative name. Put some reference photos together as your desktop background, or print them out and stick them up on your wall. Then wear something or say a catchphrase everyday that reminds you of your secret identity. Let me know how you got on by commenting below. I can’t wait to hear about your own superhero!
